Jubilee Party Deputy Leader Jeremiah Kioni has formally thrown his hat into the race to succeed Uhuru Kenyatta as the party’s leader.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Kioni said he was offering himself for the position following Uhuru’s call for an open, transparent and lawful transition.
“I hereby offer myself for the position of Party Leader of the great Jubilee Party,” Kioni said.
But Kioni is insisting that the position cannot simply be handed over to anyone.
He said Jubilee leaders are not installed but elected by party delegates at the National Delegates Convention (NDC), arguing that the party’s democratic tradition must guide the transition.
The declaration sets up a potentially consequential contest for control of Jubilee as the party seeks to redefine its political identity ahead of the 2027 elections.
Kioni also paid tribute to Uhuru, thanking him for building Jubilee into a formidable national political movement and expressing confidence that the former President would continue guiding the party through the transition.
